“The Big Plot” exposes the massive espionage and intellectual property (IP) theft carried out by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which poses serious threats to U.S. national security and businesses. Author Jason Ho highlights how China stole critical military designs, including advanced stealth fighter jets and bombers, as an ongoing strategy to undermine the U.S. and save billions in development costs.
Author Jason Ho is deeply familiar with the technologies involved, including the chip designs of the F-35, which now has an operational Chinese copy after terabytes of data were stolen. His background includes over 400 international patents over 30 years in computer chip design, optical devices, computer security, and neural networks, and he explains in depth how these are being appropriated as a major ongoing strategy by the CCP.
The book does a deep dive into how over 20,000 CCP undercover agents in the U.S. target military secrets and major corporations like Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, infiltrating systems and conducting cyberattacks. These activities exploit vulnerabilities, including the software private portals or “back doors” used by law enforcement and intelligence services to surveil foreign targets in the U.S., for government and industries such as AI, quantum computing, facial recognition, and advanced visualization.
“The Big Plot” compares China’s espionage operations to those of the Soviet Union during the Cold War. However, it notes that much less is publicly known about the Chinese effort, which is much more massive. It also discusses how China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) recruits individuals and collaborates with neighboring countries to expand its networks.
The book delves into the economic impact of this theft, with China stealing a mind-boggling $600 billion in U.S. IP annually, according to the Congressional Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. Through vivid examples, such as the infiltration of U.S. military projects and the control of popular apps like TikTok, the book illustrates how embedded China’s influence is in American systems. The importance of the book is emphasized by the CCP’s most recent cyberattack, called Salt Typhoon, characterized by the FBI Director as the most extensive attack on the U.S. in history.
“The book starkly warns about the unseen but pervasive threat that Chinese espionage poses,” shares Jason Ho. He notes the book is not only a guide for government agencies, but also for business executives seeking to partner with Chinese companies.
Jason Ho’s professional background is apparent in “The Big Plot.” For instance, he was the lead designer of computer chips for F-35 fighter plane flight control and image display systems. “China stole these designs through hacking and espionage described in the book,” he shares, adding that he reported these attacks, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) placed him under their Victim Assistance Program. The book contains a more complete list of stolen technologies, alongside the names and photos of the Chinese copies.
Moe Fukada, a Japanese best-selling author, journalist, and information technology (IT) analyst with global experience in executive management and finance, co-authored the book. She conducted extensive research and interviews of the government agencies of China’s neighbors.
